PRODUCER NOTE

Bring It On is big, bold and unapologetically larger than life. Its characters are heightened, its world is colourful and its story is filled with the kind of drama that, at first glance, can feel almost cartoonish. But underneath all of that energy is something surprisingly real: a story about belonging, identity, ambition, friendship and, ultimately, learning that we achieve far more when we stop worrying about where we stand individually and start looking at the people standing beside us. That has been at the heart of our process with this production.

One of the greatest lessons young performers can learn is that theatre is never about one person. A lead cannot tell a story without the ensemble around them. A spectacular moment onstage only works because countless people have committed to creating it together. Every harmony, every reaction, every formation, every transition and every person occupying the world of the story matters.

In many ways, that lesson mirrors the journey of Bring It On itself. Campbell begins the story with a very clear idea of what success looks like … the right position, the right team, the right title. But as her world changes, she discovers that leadership isn’t about standing at the top of the pyramid. It’s about trust. It’s about listening. It’s about recognising the strengths of the people around you and understanding that success means very little if you have nobody with whom to share it.

Throughout rehearsals, we have challenged our cast to think beyond “their part” and instead take responsibility for our show. Whether they have a leading role, a featured moment, one line or no lines at all, every performer on that stage contributes to the heartbeat of this production. The ensemble is not the background to the story … they are the world in which the story exists.

We have also spent a great deal of time searching for truth within a show that delights in caricature. These characters can be enormous, ridiculous and wonderfully theatrical, but comedy works best when the people playing it believe wholeheartedly in what is happening. Behind every exaggerated personality is a very recognisable human need… to belong, to be valued, to succeed, to be seen and to find your people. Our job has been to find those truthful moments and allow them to ground all the spectacle surrounding them.

Perhaps that is why this show has felt particularly fitting for a young company. Growing up often means discovering that the labels we place on ourselves … popular, talented, successful, different, leader, ensemble … matter far less than we once thought they did. What matters is what we bring to the people around us.

And if Bring It On leaves us with anything, I hope it is this… you don’t build something extraordinary by standing alone. You build it by trusting the people beside you, celebrating what each person brings, and understanding that every member of the team matters.

I am incredibly proud of what these young performers have built together.
