Picnic at Hanging Rock began as an Australian historical fiction novel by Joan Lindsay set in 1900, about a group of female students at an Australian girls' boarding school who vanish at Hanging Rock while on a Valentine's Day picnic, and the effects the disappearances have on the school and local community. Lindsay wrote the novel in less than two weeks and said she based the novel on the William Ford painting At Hanging Rock (1875) and was inspired by a dream she had. From there the story became the iconic Peter Wier film, two very different plays and most recently a TV Series. Each of these interpretations offer different ideas but ultimately no-one knew what happened to Miranda, Marion and Miss McCraw.
