NAPA News - Week 8, Term 3, 2023

Dear NAPA Families,

Happy Father’s Day to all our super NAPA Dads and Grandads! Hope you all had a fabulous day being spoilt by your children. Nature certainly turned on the beautiful weather for your special day.

Frozen Week

This week sees the production of our much-awaited performances of Frozen. There’s lots of excitement around the studio to see this popular musical. With over 200 costumes created, special lighting effects programmed and a creation of a set that doesn’t have a multi-million-dollar budget as a professional performance of this musical, has been quite a challenge. Laura, Kim, Laurie and Thomas deserve a huge thank you for all the time they have devoted to meeting this huge challenge. A big thank you also goes out also to some of our College students who are helping backstage and parents for supervising dressing rooms. “CHOOKAS” to all the cast and our production team, Laura, Kim and Jackie. Wishing you all a very successful show!

Changes to Cancellation of Classes

Due to the Frozen performances using all the dance rooms as change rooms we will need to cancel all classes Thursday, Friday & Saturday. Wednesday night classes that have been cancelled have been notified directly (Opens Performance Teams, Pre-Senior Acting), but all other Wednesday classes remain on (Junior Acting, Ballet, Senior Technique). An email has been sent out to cancelled Wednesday night classes regarding an alternative for that night.

Explanation Regarding Cancellation of Classes

Most of you understand how we work regarding cancellation of classes during production time, but for new people who are unsure as to how this works, this is an opportune time to explain. NAPA is a production company that stages more shows in a year than any performing arts studio we know. We do this so that all classes get to perform on stage or on screen. Fees would be through the roof if we hired a theatre outside of NAPA hence why we have built our own theatre. Most studios charge for any extra rehearsals, we don’t.  However, if we have to cancel classes due to productions being on where we not only use the theatre but also the dance studios as dressing rooms, you can be rest assured that the class will make up the time in extra rehearsals or in the case of FTV, extra filming sessions and time for teacher editing of footage. Your fees are based on a yearly amount to cover lessons, rehearsals, and other learning experiences then divided into 10 instalments from February to November.

Congratulations to our Vocal Soloists

Congratulations to all of our vocal soloists who entered the Gold Coast Eisteddfods. Great results cherubs! A special mention to those who also won special awards.

Emily Hayes

1st Place Championship and awarded the Paul Sharratt Memorial Trophy

Ella Shave

1st Place Championship

Ella Moris-Fontes

2nd Place Championship

I have to mention here that it’s extra special for me that Emily received the Paul Sharratt Memorial Trophy. When I was a professional performer Paul was my boss for many performances I did where he was the producer. He was an incredible comedian but was renowned for growing the arts on the Gold Coast in a huge way. Paul had an impact on so many performers. He also ran the Tropicarnival – a great festival on the Gold Coast, where he incorporated Tropicana eisteddfods. When Tropicana no longer ran, the name for the eisteddfod became known as the Gold Coast Eisteddfod.

NAPA Closed in September Holidays

During the September holidays, we will be having the floor and wall replaced in West End, our air-cons serviced, some electrical work done and two airconditioners replaced, so the studio will be full of tradies and power cuts during the holidays.  This means there will be no privates or access to the studio during the holidays.

Helpers Needed for the West End Transformation

Thank you to our P&F and all the parents who have assisted in some way for the fundraising to improve our main dance studio – West End. To reduce the cost, we would love some help to get some of the simple tasks done. In this way, we will be able to use the saved money for more resources for our students. If you are quite strong and active we would love some helpers (including senior students) on 20 September to do some general labouring for the carpenters. It will require some heavy lifting but not too extreme. Any time during the day between 8am – 3.30pm would be great, even if it’s only for an hour. The improvement to this room will be an incredible change for our students. Hoping to get a few helpers during the day.

Two Weeks to Claim Lost Property

Please look carefully in case your child has lost any of these items. These will be rehomed on the last day of term. They are on the Lost Property stand in reception.
