NAPA News - Week 6, Term 3, 2021

Dear NAPA Families,

Just as you are all juggling life with COVID changes, Kim and I are constantly having to think outside the square and make continual changes in response to the COVID challenges presented to us on a daily basis. As mentioned before, our calendar in Semester 2 is already full of performances, so when something can’t go ahead on the date scheduled, a massive amount of thought, energy and changes need to be made.  It is like a domino effect when one thing changes so does nearly everything else. So please understand that some changes require our students and their families to make sacrifices so that we can make things happen for performances that each class and their teachers have worked so hard to get to the performance stage. This is a team effort and although some decisions are a challenge in themselves, we ask that everyone does their part in accommodating these changes for the good of the team. It is also important to appreciate and give credit to our teachers who are giving up extra personal time for no charge to do these extra rehearsals needed when changes occur.

I guess by now, if you have read my introduction, you have surmised that this newsletter is about to reveal more changes, so prepare yourselves for our next response to more challenges sent our way this week. However, let us start and finish with some great news.

Let’s hope no more curve balls are sent our way, but we are proud of how so many of you have risen to the challenge and helped us to make it all work out

Take care,
Lynn

Congratulations Abigail’s Coven Cast

What a FANTASTIC team effort! On top of us having to go into lockdown on what was supposed to be their last performance, and therefore having to postpone it to the only date available, Friday 13 (not a good omen), one of our cast members and the director were in sudden lockdown over the border. As there was no place on our calendar to reschedule again with other shows going into the theatre, the cast sat down with me on Thursday evening, and as a team we made some changes with students having to either take on additional lines on or change their dialogue. They had Friday to learn these changes, came in Friday at 5 pm before the show, did a run with the changes, then went onto perform a flawless performance. OUTSTANDING! And what an incredible learning experience! We are so proud of each and every one of them! Congratulations cherubs!

Flesh – Another change

Sadly, due to the NSW lockdown three members in this cast cannot enter QLD so the performance scheduled for this weekend cannot go ahead. With the tight schedule of getting the set in for the following performance, Into the Woods, we will need to move Flesh to the Sunday the day after closing night of Into the Woods, using some of their set (as it has some similar elements).  We can only fit in one performance but on Sunday 19 September we will perform the play to be filmed at 2pm (no audience) and then have a dinner break together and perform for a live audience at 6pm. A new rehearsal schedule has been sent out to the cast by Miss Claudine. If you have booked already, please change your tickets to this new date. Let’s hope this works out for everyone.

Performance Teams

Well, a lot has changed for us this week! After GTB Finals dates changed, we were also faced with an uncertain postponement of Gold Coast Eisteddfod. However, as you would have already heard from Miss Kim, these groups have all been rescheduled! Please ensure you have read all communication from Kim and that you are following Gold Coast Eisteddfod on social media. This is where you can find updates when it comes to things like tickets, COVID regulations and last minute event updates.

New group dates for GCE

  • Thursday 26th August: All Under 6s and Under 8s

  • Friday 27th August: Under 10s Lyrical and Song&Dance

  • Saturday 28th August: All Under 15s

  • Sunday 29th August: Open Broadway Jazz, Acro, Song&Dance/Tap, Musical Theatre

  • Saturday 11th September: 10s Small Group, Opens Small Group, Opens Lyrical

  • Sunday 12th September: All Under 12s

A massive "chookas" also goes out to all of our soloists who will begin competing this week at GCE. Good luck cherubs!

Please note - extra rehearsals for productions

Some musical classes will be having some rehearsals during the holidays and extra evenings and weekends to catch up on times missed during lockdown or not being able to use times in the theatre due to the changes in the Playbill. These classes will be contacted individually by the shows’ directors if this happens. At NAPA we do not charge for any extra rehearsals and these more than make up for any missed classes you have had in the year.

HAPPY NEWS!

Here at NAPA we never stop feeling proud of the achievements of our students, not only while they are with us but well into their futures.  Seeing them live their dreams makes every minute invested into them all worth while. This week we want to celebrate the achievements of these two incredible performers.

Congratulations Max Bimbi in his performance in West Side Story which I got to see on Saturday night at the Lyric theatre.

We all can’t wait to see Michael Bishop (who graduated last year) in his performance in the Disney movie Spin, but check out these incredible pictures in the media. Congratulations Michael.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS FOR 2022

We have had lots of interest in students joining NAPA College next year. Please note we can only take students who are either going into Year 10 or Year 11 in 2022. This is a 2 or 3 year course. Applications close on 31 August. Once applications have been submitted you will be contacted with audition dates.

For those who are not sure what the College is about, it is a full-time course where students gain a CUA40520 Certificate IV in Musical Theatre conducted under our partnership with Australian Teachers of Dancing (RTO31624). Students will complete their senior schooling to gain their QCE through distance education. Their academic studies are supervised at NAPA as an extra service to free parents from home schooling commitments. When students begin this Nationally Accredited Training, the delivery and assessment will be conducted by NAPA.  We ensure that highly respected industry professionals concentrate on developing the required skills and provide opportunities toward students achieving their goals. If you need to discuss this further, don’t hesitate to contact me to set up a meeting. ([email protected])
